Transitioning Zachary to Table Foods (Part Two, How It Worked Out)

It has now been a few weeks since I wrote about Zachary transitioning to table foods, as well as the corresponding change to his daily routine.  I said I would publish an update after a few weeks – so here is how it has gone…

Zachary starts each meal with several table foods to make a complete meal (protein, grain, fruit/veggie) and if he needs a supplement, he gets some baby food towards the end.  We also started introducing a cup, first with water, and then with formula.  Zachary has loved eating on his own!  For a boy that has never had that large of an appetite when it has come to bottles or breastfeeding (check out my post about my breastfeeding journey to get a flavor), he has fully embraced the eating experience!  I know that at home (or out), he eats a lot, and his teachers report to me that at school, he often gets seconds or even thirds!  It’s almost as if he has said “why were you holding out on me for the past 11 months with this bottle  and baby food business?”

The food he has so far liked the best has been:

  • mandarin oranges (he will eat an entire fruit cup full!)
  • small pieces of chicken
  • black beans, smashed just a bit
  • grated cheese or crumbled feta cheese
  • meatball pieces
  • bread with cream cheese
  • peas
  • banana chunks
  • cut up apples, microwaved to soften them a bit
  • pasta, especially shells and rotini styles
  • tortillas
  • Vienna sausages, whole

It’s been a bit messy, but fun to watch him have so much fun exploring new tastes and textures!  Here are a few photo ops:
